How to differentiate neck pain? At MIVI Salud we tell you

If you’ve ever suffered from neck pain, you’ll know how uncomfortable it can be. But the tricky part is when you don’t know exactly what’s causing it. Here we tell you, in a simple way, how to differentiate some types of neck pain so you have a clearer idea of what may be happening to you.

1. Cervicogenic headaches (headache originating in the neck)

This type of headache comes from the neck, although at first it may not seem so. It may be due to problems in the vertebrae or muscles in that area.
How do you recognize it?

  • It starts at the neck and moves up towards the head, often on one side only.
  • It increases with sudden movements or bad posture (beware of spending hours hunched over at the computer!).
  • It may be accompanied by stiffness in the neck.

2. Cervical radicular pain or “cervical sciatica”.

The famous sciatica pain in the neck. It occurs when a nerve in the cervical spine is irritated or compressed, causing the pain to not only stay in the neck, but to spread.
How do you recognize it?

  • The pain goes from the neck to the shoulder, arm or even hand.
  • It may feel like an electric shock, accompanied by tingling or numbness in the arm.
  • Moving the neck may worsen these symptoms.

3. Cervico-dorsal myofascial syndrome

This type of pain is the one that arises when the muscles of the neck and upper back become too tense, forming those annoying “knots” or contractures.
How do you recognize it?

  • Localized pain in the neck and upper back muscles.
  • If you press certain areas (the so-called trigger points), the pain is triggered.
  • Sensation of stiffness and discomfort that sometimes spreads to the back or shoulders.

4. Cervical facet syndrome

This pain has to do with the joints of the cervical spine, the so-called facet joints. It occurs when these joints become worn or inflamed.
How do you recognize it?

  • Deep, localized pain in the neck, often felt on both sides.
  • It increases when moving the neck, especially when turning it or tilting it backwards.
  • It may radiate to the shoulders or upper back.

So, what do I do if I have any of these pains?

The most important thing is that if the pain persists or is very intense, consult a specialist. A good diagnosis is key to correctly treat your neck pain, either through physiotherapy, medication or more advanced treatments. Don’t let pain limit your life!
