Lipedema in the first person: An’s story of overcoming it

Our Medical Director, Jorge Orduña, tells us today in his podcast Pirates of Pain about a case that reflects the reality of thousands of women: the late diagnosis of Lipedema. In this episode, Dr. Orduña talks with Ana, a lawyer who lived for decades with a condition that she herself normalized, thinking that her swollen and painful legs were simply a matter of genetics or poor circulation. Her testimony is a guide of hope and tenacity for those seeking answers to a pain that is often ignored by the healthcare system.

The long road to diagnosis

Ana tells how since puberty she noticed a clear disproportion between her trunk and legs. Despite following strict diets and exercising, the volume of her lower extremities did not diminish. For years, she heard professional phrases that downplayed her condition, describing it as “capricious fatness” that did not entail cardiovascular risks. However, what for others was an aesthetic issue, for her was a daily burden of heaviness, spontaneous bruising and pain so acute that even the rubbing of a massage was unbearable.

The turning point: The holistic vision

The change for Ana came when she consulted for knee pain. It was Dr. Orduña who, after performing a complete physical examination, suspected that it was not a common joint injury, but Lipedema. Discovering that her symptoms had a medical name was the first step to stop blaming herself and start acting. Ana then undertook an investigation of her own, contacting rehabilitation, vascular and nutritional specialists who understood the chronic, inflammatory nature of her fatty tissue.

The success of conservative treatment without surgery

Although liposuction is often presented as the only way out, Ana’s case shows that commitment to a multidisciplinary treatment can offer spectacular results. In eight months, she has managed to reduce four pant sizes and lose 17 kg without going under the knife. Her strategy was based on three fundamental pillars:

  • Anti-inflammatory Diet: A radical change of habits eliminating sugars, refined flours and processed foods, prioritizing those with a low glycemic index.

  • Constant Compression: Daily use of compression leggings to promote venous return and protect microcirculation.

  • Exercise and Supplementation: Targeted functional training and the support of natural supplements (probiotics, magnesium, collagen) to de-inflate the body and improve intestinal flora.

Coexistence with Fibromyalgia

Ana, who also has fibromyalgia, shares a key distinction for other patients: while fibromyalgia pain is generalized and very sensitive to emotional stress, lipedema pain is localized from the waist down, with a feeling of heaviness and very specific tactile pain in the fat. Interestingly, by applying the anti-inflammatory diet for lipedema, Ana has also experienced a marked improvement in her fibromyalgia flare-ups and recurrent headaches.

A message to institutions and patients

Ana’s testimony ends with a necessary demand: medical training. It is essential that family doctors and specialists recognize Lipedema in order to avoid the “pilgrimage” from consultation to consultation. To the women who identify with her story, she sends a direct message: do not normalize the pain or settle for the diagnosis of “it is what you got”. Investing time and effort in yourself makes the difference between simply enduring and aging with quality of life.

Ana’s story is not just a clinical case; it is proof that, when a patient takes control of his or her health and has the right professional guidance, it is possible to “fly again” and regain vitality that was thought to be lost.
