Facial Neuralgia

What is

Atypical facial neuralgia, also called persistent idiopathic facial pain, is a pain that is often confused with trigeminal neuralgia and that is why many patients have an incorrect diagnosis that leads to incorrect treatments.

Symptoms

Pain in atypical facial neuralgia is continuous, appearing daily.
It can affect both sides of the face.
It usually appears on the upper lip, the nasal ala or the cheek, and may gradually spread to the rest of the face and part of the neck.
It may occur in the dental area and be related to dental procedures.
The pain is usually accompanied by burning sensations, swelling, tingling or throbbing.

Diagnosis and assessment

A correct medical evaluation will be necessary by means of a good anamnesis, physical examination and, if necessary, support of imaging tests. Focusing especially on detecting the origin and cause of the pain. Sometimes this diagnosis may involve the collaboration of other professionals such as neurologists, neurosurgeons, maxillofacial surgeons, dentists, rehabilitators and physiotherapists.

Treatment

Drugs for pain relief
Interventional treatments: when pain control is not sufficient with drugs, interventional treatments are applied to alleviate pain. Treatments such as spheno-palatine ganglion block and the application of radiofrequency are of great help.

Quiero destacar el gran trabajo de Nicolás.
