Arnold’s neuralgia

What is

Arnold’s neuralgia is a pain that occurs in the cervical region, especially in the occipital region. It usually presents as a constant stabbing pain in the form of an electric shock or numbness perceived in the occipital part of the head.

Causes

Arnold’s neuralgia is caused by the compression or involvement of one of the nerves that runs upwards through the neck area, the greater occipital nerve. The nerve becomes inflamed as a consequence, generally, of a muscular contracture, in addition to the greater occipital nerve, the lesser occipital nerve can also be compressed and inflamed producing similar symptoms.

Symptoms

Arnold’s neuralgia can produce a sensation of very intense sensitivity in the area and the sensation of having electric shocks running through the occipital region. Dizziness may occur and contractures may be found in the cervical region and at the base of the head.

Diagnosis and assessment

A correct medical evaluation by means of a good anamnesis and physical examination will be necessary. The multidisciplinary approach is essential for a comprehensive, personalized approach, focused on achieving prolonged pain relief depending on the stage of the patient and may involve the collaboration of neurologists, neurosurgeons, maxillofacial surgeons, dentists, rehabilitators and physiotherapists.
