International Nurses Day. Living with pain also means learning to take care of yourself.
World Nursing Day: The Value of Care for Patients with Chronic Pain
The Role of Nursing in Pain Clinics and in Patients’ Quality of Life
When we talk about chronic pain, we often think of diagnoses, treatments, or medical procedures. But behind every patient, there is also an essential part of care that supports, listens, guides, and helps them cope with daily life while living with pain: nursing.
On International Nurses Day, we want to highlight the work of nursing professionals who, in pain management units, support patients not only from a clinical standpoint, but also on a human and emotional level.
Chronic pain affects much more than just a specific part of the body. It can disrupt sleep, limit mobility, affect mood, and impact the personal, family, and work lives of those who suffer from it. For this reason, managing pain requires a comprehensive approach in which nursing care plays a fundamental role.
Nursing: Support, Education, and Care for Chronic Pain
Nurses are often the closest and most consistent point of contact for patients. They listen, answer questions, help patients understand their treatments, and provide support throughout the entire care process.
In addition to clinical care, nursing plays a key role in health education and in promoting habits that can help improve the quality of life for people with chronic pain.
Among the most common recommendations are:
- Maintain a consistent sleep schedule and practice good sleep hygiene to promote better rest and reduce the impact of pain.
- Stay active within each person’s capabilities through adapted physical activity, mobility exercises, or gentle exercises.
- Listen to your body without feeling guilty, understanding that there will be better days and more difficult ones along the way.
- Pay attention to your diet, hydration, and daily habits, as they also affect your physical and emotional well-being.
- Express how you feel and ask for help when necessary, both from healthcare professionals and from those close to you.
- Seek out moments of well-being and relaxation that also help nurture your emotional health.
The Human Value of Nursing in Pain Management
In pain units, nurses do more than just provide care or conduct clinical follow-ups. They also offer comfort, reassurance, and emotional support during times that are particularly difficult for many patients.
Sometimes, small gestures—such as a conversation, a clear explanation, or simply feeling heard—can make a big difference in the experience of someone living with chronic pain.
That is why, on this International Nurses Day, we at Grupo MIVI would like to recognize and thank all nursing professionals for their commitment, dedication, and devotion as they play a vital role in the comprehensive care of our patients.
Because caring also means being there for someone. And being there for someone is often a fundamental part of treatment.
