“Overcoming pain in a natural way” Dr. Luis Aliaga

Dr. Luis Aliaga Font (1950 – 2015) has been one of the most prestigious Spanish physicians in recent decades. His work in the study and treatment of pain has covered countless fields, ranging from teaching to research, and including other notable milestones such as the creation of the first Pain Clinic in Spain, or being a founding member of the Spanish Pain Society and its publication, the journal Dolor. His work extends through his publications, both in medical journals and in the books he wrote or collaborated on.

Today we would like to talk about one of his publications: “Vencer el dolor de forma natural” (Océano Ambar, 2012). A work that, in collaboration with several members of his team, and with a clear orientation to the patient, aims to bring the knowledge acquired during more than 30 years of experience in the field of pain to the reader, in a pleasant and practical way.

A part of his legacy turned into a very valuable contribution, which we hope can be of help to people who suffer pain, as well as to their closest environment and to anyone who is interested in this subject.

A light in the shadows

Chronic pain is one of the greatest challenges of modern medicine. Many of the people who live with it do not find an explanation for their pain, and many do not find relief in the treatment either, generating a damage that goes beyond the physical and can extend to all areas of life.

The multidisciplinary approach to treating pain that Dr. Luis Aliaga emphasizes both in his works and in the practice of his work, responds to a need that goes beyond simple pain relief. The book“Vencer el dolor de forma natural” is a good example of this, dedicating part of it to the psychological impact of pain. psychological impact and the role of psychology in the treatment, or on the different techniques that exist to minimize its influence on our mental health.

During the first third of the book, Dr. Luis Aliaga makes a summary of the history of pain, to continue dealing with interesting aspects such as the mechanisms of pain activation, the perception we have of it, the importance of specialized centers such as the Aliaga Institute, and the different existing treatments.

It is undoubtedly an effective and simple way to situate ourselves in everything related to pain and what surrounds it, before getting into the subject. It is necessary to understand what pain is, how it acts on our organism, and how it can affect us.

Treating pain naturally

The bulk of “Overcoming Pain Naturally” is a comprehensive review of the most common types of pain that exist, and how we can deal with them naturally, as the title of the book indicates.

Previously, Dr. Luis Aliaga prepares us to understand that the treatment of pain is not limited only to pharmacological treatment, either because it is not necessary to resort to anti-inflammatory or analgesic drugs, or because we do not know the origin and causes of the pain.

The book establishes a bridge between traditional and natural medicine, offering alternatives for those cases in which they are indicated, while emphasizing the need to implement healthy habits in our lives.

There are differences between conventional medicine, in which the patient often takes a passive role, and natural medicine, which requires a much more active participation of the patient. This involves certain activities, such as physical exercise, changing some of our habits and improving our diet. The practice of alternative therapies, such as phytotherapy or acupuncture, is also of great help.

Among the wide list of common pains covered in the book, we can find from headaches, back pain, or throat pain, to others such as fibromyalgia, postoperative or oncologic.

“Overcoming pain naturally” was a pioneering work as it is focused on the patient, and aims to provide useful information on a very complex subject in order to improve knowledge about pain, offering alternatives for the relief of certain types of pain.

The book is available on platforms such as Amazon and La Casa del Libro.
