Hyaluronic acid

Hyaluronic acid in pain management

Hyaluronic acid is a molecule that is part of the architecture of the cartilage of the joints that traps water giving it viscoelastic capabilities and thus limits the impact between the joints. When there is a reduction of this molecule, the cartilage thins and wears out and may even disappear, producing localized pain in the area where it occurs. It is in these cases where treatment with hyaluronic acid is recommended.

Procedure

To correctly apply the treatment with hyaluronic acid and to obtain the efficacy it can provide, a correct diagnosis and evaluation of the patient is essential. The doctor will ask specific questions that, together with the physical examination and evaluation of the complementary tests, will allow to determine with more precision which are the causes of the pain.

An injection guided by ultrasound or X-ray will be performed with the prior application of a local anesthetic to allow the needle to be placed inside the joint with the least possible pain.

It does not require hospitalization in most cases.

Frequently Asked Questions about Hyaluronic Acid Treatment

What aches and pains does hyaluronic acid remove?

Yes, hyaluronic acid is very effective in relieving joint pain, especially that caused by osteoarthritis (wear and tear of the cartilage). It acts as a natural lubricant and shock absorber within the joint, reducing friction between the bones, thereby reducing pain and improving mobility.

Is hyaluronic acid anti-inflammatory?

Yes, in addition to its lubricating function, hyaluronic acid has anti-inflammatory properties that help reduce inflammation within the joint, which contributes to pain relief.

Is it normal to have swelling after a hyaluronic acid injection?

Yes, it is completely normal and common to experience mild swelling, redness and tenderness at the injection site for the first few days. These effects usually resolve on their own.

Am I a good candidate for this treatment?

This treatment is ideal for you if you suffer from osteoarthritis joint pain (mild to moderate) and are looking for a safe alternative to painkillers or before considering surgery. A specialist doctor will evaluate your case to confirm if it is the best option for you.

Is the procedure painful?

No. The infiltration is a fast and very well tolerated procedure. Local anesthesia is used so that you only feel a small initial prick. Discomfort is minimal and you can go home the same day.

Is it a safe treatment and what side effects does it have?

Yes, it is extremely safe. Hyaluronic acid is a substance that your body already produces. Side effects are local and mild, such as minor swelling or tenderness at the injection site, which disappear within a couple of days.

What care should I take after the infiltration?

Recovery is very simple. It is recommended to avoid intense exercise for 48 hours. Otherwise, you can resume your daily activities as normal. It is a treatment that adapts to your rhythm of life.

Efficiency

In most cases, after therapy, pain would be considerably relieved and motor activity would be improved by decreasing tension and increasing strength on the quality of movement. In case of injury, recovery times would be reduced. On the other hand, tissue oxygenation would be improved and the patient's functional system would be rebalanced.
